Your RCD sits in your consumer unit (fuse box) or is built into a socket, and it watches the electrical flow continuously. When a fault current reaches 30 milliamps (mA), the device detects the imbalance and disconnects the circuit immediately. That 30 mA threshold is significant because research shows currents above this level can cause ventricular fibrillation, a potentially fatal disruption to heart rhythm.

RCDs are not the same as circuit breakers or fuses. A fuse or circuit breaker protects against overloads and short circuits, while an RCD protects specifically against earth fault currents. Many UK consumer units now include RCBOs (residual current circuit breakers with overcurrent protection), which combine both functions in one device, but the RCD testing principle remains identical.

When you should test your RCD

Most people only think about how to test an RCD after something goes wrong, which defeats the purpose entirely. The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 do not prescribe a single fixed domestic testing interval, but recognised industry guidance consistently points to regular checks as the minimum reasonable standard for any property type.

Locate your RCD in the consumer unit

Open the cover and look for switches labelled "RCD" or carrying a test button, typically marked with a "T" symbol. These are distinct from your standard circuit breakers, which are narrower and have no test button.

Locate your RCD in the consumer unit

Some properties have multiple RCDs covering different circuit groups, such as one for upstairs sockets and another for lighting circuits. Identify each one before you start, so you know exactly which areas of the property will lose power during the test sequence.

Press and release the test button

  1. Press the test button firmly and hold it for one to two seconds. The RCD should trip immediately, switching to the off or tripped position.
  2. Confirm the switch has visibly moved. If it stays in the on position, the RCD has failed the test.
  3. Do not press the button repeatedly. Proceed to Step 2 to reset and record the result.

The test button works by sending a small artificial fault current through the device's internal circuitry. A functioning RCD responds to this exactly as it would to a real earth fault.

Step 2. Reset safely and record what happened

Once your RCD has tripped during the test, the circuit it covers will be completely dead. This is the expected result, and it confirms the device responded correctly to the artificial fault signal. Before you restore power, switch off or unplug anything connected to that circuit to prevent unexpected restarts and protect sensitive equipment from a sudden return of power.

How to reset the RCD

To reset the device, push the switch firmly back to the on position. On most consumer units, the switch sits in a halfway position after tripping rather than dropping fully to off, so push it all the way down to off first, then push it back up to on. A working RCD resets cleanly and holds its position without resistance or hesitation. If it trips again immediately with nothing connected to the circuit, move on to Step 3 to troubleshoot the fault.

If your RCD refuses to reset or trips again instantly with no load connected, stop using that circuit and call a qualified electrician before continuing.

Log the result straight away

Recording what happens each time is simple but easy to skip, and it carries real weight over time. A written log gives you a clear history of the device's behaviour, which is useful during an EICR inspection and for demonstrating due diligence as a landlord or business owner if a safety question ever arises.

Step 3. Troubleshoot common test failures

A failed test result does not always mean your RCD needs immediate replacement, but it does mean you need to act quickly. Each points to a different underlying problem.

RCD trips but will not reset

If your RCD trips during the test but will not hold the on position when you push it back up, a fault is almost certainly present on the circuit it protects. The device is doing its job correctly by refusing to restore power to a faulty circuit.

Work through this sequence before calling an electrician:

  1. Unplug every appliance connected to the affected circuit.
  2. Switch off all lights on that circuit at the wall.
  3. Attempt to reset the RCD with nothing connected.
  4. If it holds, plug appliances back in one at a time to identify which one causes the trip.
  5. If it still will not reset with nothing connected, the fault is in the fixed wiring itself. Stop and call a qualified electrician immediately.

Never force an RCD to stay in the on position or use tape to hold it there. That removes the only protection between you and a live fault.

RCD does not trip when tested

A device that stays on when you press the test button has failed. This is the more serious outcome because it means the RCD cannot protect anyone on that circuit. The mechanical or electronic components inside have degraded to the point where the device no longer responds to a fault signal.
